Abstract

The past 20 years have witnessed an extraordinarily rapid adoption of minimally invasive surgical techniques, and increasingly these techniques are being employed in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of malignancies. This book is designed to serve as a unique and comprehensive overview of the current status of minimally invasive surgery in oncology patients and in addition offers valuable insights into the future of this constantly evolving field. The first section of the book is devoted to essential background information and to explaining what is physiologically distinctive in the cancer patient undergoing laparoscopic surgery. The second section then examines in detail a wide range of clinical aspects and issues across different disciplines, with clear instruction on the use of minimally invasive procedures. The aim is to enable the reader to make treatment decisions appropriate to the individual patient, to carry them out effectively, and to institute suitable postoperative care. Summaries of the latest knowledge in traditional therapies such as chemotherapy are also provided when appropriate. Each chapter is written by a recognized expert, and numerous high-quality illustrations are included to assist understanding. This book will serve both as a clinical reference guide and as an operative atlas, and is certain to prove invaluable in daily clinical practice.

Abstract

The development of less invasive technologies has resulted in a changing paradigm for the management of aortic diseases. Endovascular and hybrid surgical approaches have gradually been adopted by cardiovascular surgeons and have proven to shorten hospitalization, reduce morbidity and mortality, speed recovery and hasten return to normal life, and consequently have shown to be favorable to open surgical techniques in most situations. Nevertheless, the current training programs have not been designed to accommodate the rapid evolution in endovascular technology, 3D imaging modalities, intravascular ultrasound technology and advanced navigational tools. It is essential that cardiovascular surgeons have the fundamental knowledge and skill sets required to understand and incorporate all these latest technology into the practice of aortic surgery. The Manual of Thoracic Endoaortic Surgery identifies both the limitations and the advantages of thoracic aortic endografting techniques. While there is no substitute for learning from experience, the book provides a useful tool for practitioners as they plan and execute treatment plans for patients with these various thoracic aortic pathologies as well as serving as a useful reference as this segment of the field expands.

Abstract

Since the first laparoscopic approach for a urologic tumor was performed in 1991, the field has evolved dramatically and minimally invasive surgery is today a significant surgical option for the treatment of patients with prostate and other urologic cancers. Laparoscopic Techniques in Urologic Oncology is a comprehensive technical manual of these current laparoscopic practices written by a panel of international contributors. Laparoscopic Techniques in Urologic Oncology includes many illustrations documenting each step of each procedure, as well as descriptions of nuances and common pitfalls. By emphasizing successful techniques, this book will be of use to the surgeons wanting to hone their skills in laparoscopy and for residents just entering this highly demanding field. Specific chapters include the following procedures: Adrenal gland tumors (radical/partial adrenalectomy) Bladder cancer (radical cystectomy and urinary diversion) Kidney tumors (radical/partial nephrectomy) Pelvic lymph node dissection Prostate cancer (radical prostatectomy) Testis cancer (retroperitoneal lymph node dissection) Upper urinary tract cancers (nephro-uretectomy).
